The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has a massive 1” Sony IMX989 sensor – that must be quite expensive, right? Well... as it turns out, no. Counterpoint Research has a breakdown and analysis of the Bill of Materials (BoM) for the phone and that sensor is not the most expensive piece of kit on the phone. Far from it, actually. The base unit with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage costs $516 or so to manufacture, but it sells for CNY 6,000 (that’s just under $900).
